The “Ancient Mediterranean Asclepieia” is a Research and Lifelong Learning Program of interdisciplinary approaches and promotion of the historical and cultural capital of Greece and the Mediterranean countries. It combines inquiries in the roots of local traditions with proposals for sustainable management and innovative entrepreneurship. .

The cult of Asclepius developed significantly and acquired particular conceptual, religious and medical characteristics during the Hellenistic period, being part of the broader political, social, cultural and intellectual context of that period. The tradition of Asclepius is a religious and sacred medicine since spiritual worries, feelings, hopes, purification, dreams, gifts to the gods, dedicatory inscriptions, priests, symbols, contribute to an expression of the soul. The Asclepieia were sacred temples of the god Asclepius where offered healing treatments, also functioned as medical schools, where many studied on the side of great healers of antiquity.

The purpose of the Lifelong Learning Paths in the Ancient Mediterranean Asclepia is to approach concepts, phenomena and processes that were studied and deepened in the beginnings of Western Science and Medicine in Asclepieia and Presocratic Philosophy, setting interdisciplinary queries of transition from the mysterious to their scientific character. The hikers will explore and discover, virtually and in person, Mediterranean entities in time and in space and share ideas, experiences, reviews, stories, images, the beauty of Nature and the Wisdom of the Mediterranean Sea’s ancient populations. The study of the Ancient Greek Asclepieia, highlights their architectural structuring and historical timeline, the medical operations, therapeutic techniques and materials, etc. The hikers in the ancient therapeutic paths of the Mediterranean Asclepia can realize how the spaces were designed and equipped to meet the medical needs of that era, and inquire comparisons and connections, convergences and divergences with the modern Medicine, Pharmacy and Therapeutic Diets for a more holistic and qualitative way of living.

The Lifelong Learning Paths in the ancient Mediterranean Asclepieia, offer opportunities for experiential activities to explore and investigate the Ancient Mediterranean Asclepia, the related Geography, History and Mythology, by focusing in the ancient Hellenic-Roman healing practices and philosophy which prevailed for many centuries, and seek comparisons with the modern way of living.

The Architectural works, in the material form of the buildings, are often perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements. The Architecture of Aslepieia is basically constituted of the aesthetic, the engineering and the social aspects of about eight centuries’ civilization in the Mediterranean area. The designed spaces and the activities of people were interrelated and inseparable served the healing demands of that era.

Following the Lifelong Learning Paths for exploration and discovering the Ancient Mediterranean Asclepieia, participants will share ideas, experiences, reviews, stories, images, the beauty of Nature and Ancient Greek philosophy and wisdom, and with this, they’ll promote knowledge, skills, and their own portfolio.
